Nyctanassa violacea

We watched this Yellow-crowned night-heron
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow-crowned_Night_Heron)
from the porch of the condo on Longboat Key...also many jumping mullet fish

Why do mullet jump?
Over the years there have been numerous theories concerning the leaping of mullet. There seems to be two categories of leaping: predator avoidance and aerial respiration.
Leaping to avoid predators usually involves more than one fish jumping simultaneously, retaining an upright posture and entering the water cleanly.
The second type of leaping involves a single fish that does a slower, shorter leap, often flipping onto its side or even onto its back. They may also roll at the surface or move with their head above the water.

As I sit here in rain drenched Oregon, still mostly a prisoner in my home thanks to the slow recovering knee, I am so envious of you right now. I love all things tropical (excpet perhaps the bugs).

This time of year is really nice here weatherwise---also my relatives are staying in a great location so I am getting out to the beachy parts more than usual. I actually went to the public pool and swam today as it was around 80 here!!!
Oregon can be pretty awsome though! Lots of lovely green trees and rivers etc....also you all have some hills! Florida is so flat!

Yes, I do love Oregon in the summer, it's just gorgous here then, and I do love the mountains. I lived first in the the valley of the Rubby Mountains in Nevada and then in Lincoln Nebraska. The whole time I lived in Nebraska I hated how flat it was, hated that as far as I could see in any direction it was just flat, flat, flat. I could never ever again live someplace flat or land locked.

Well-spotted and identified! I'm glad to know what kind of bird that was.
